52 Weeks of Food Storage
Week 11
- Budget: $15 – $20 (we’ve got $5 extra this month, so use it this week if you’d like, or you can use it next week)
- Purchase: Salt & Pepper
This week is EASY: Salt & Pepper
All right, your budget is $15 and you’re just getting salt and pepper. That’s it. This was under $5 at Costco. This size of pepper was a little over $5 at Costco. So together this was about 10 bucks. If you’re shopping somewhere other than Costco, you’ll probably see a lot of this size. This is around a couple dollars. Really cheap, really doable.
Don’t forget if you have a pepper grinder, you may want to purchase one of these or some sort of whole black peppercorns. So whatever variety you use, that is what you are getting. I did put a budget of $15 for this week because it is not a bad idea to get a couple of each, especially like I said, if you’re getting whole peppercorn and the normal ground pepper, you’re gonna want some of each for that. And then if you use sea salt versus just like the cheap Morton iodized salt. So get a variety. Don’t worry about seasoning salt or seasoned salt this week. Just do the plain old salt and pepper, $15.

Shelf Life
Salt has a super long shelf life as it comes. Pepper’s expiration date is a little bit shorter from what I’ve noticed. So if you’re not a huge pepper fan, if you don’t use a ton of it, you may wanna consider only getting one or two, like maybe the smaller types rather than the larger ones. You know about how much you go through. Probably you can guess, you can guesstimate. But with salt I would not worry about expiration dates at all. And to be honest, I have used pepper well past its expiration date and I’ve never noticed a difference, to be honest.
So, I’m a pretty big stickler on expiration dates, but on pepper I’m not. So anyway, spend as close as you can to $15 on salt and pepper this week, any variations but do stick to just plain salt. We’re gonna hit seasoned salt another week with other seasonings. I really want you to spend your max budget on just salt and pepper because they are essential to flavoring just about any meal.
