Okay, this week we are making our long term food storage purchase, and I am going to follow the Thrive Life specials right now, but you don’t have to if you’re getting them from somewhere else or whatever. This is just kind of my overview of what is on sale this month.
Green Beans (25 year shelf life)
First up is green beans. They are 30 percent off.
These are fine. I definitely store green beans. They are not my favorite, but they’re fine. I feel like sometimes you know the little seam, where the bean comes together? I feel like that is really pronounced in a freeze dried bean. Maybe it’s just me. Anyway, they’re good though. They’re great. I store them. They’re good.
Chicken Slices (25 year shelf life)
Chicken slices. You all know how I feel about chicken. Any freeze dried chicken, doesn’t matter where it comes from. I don’t love the taste. It tastes microwaved or reheated to me. Kind of gives like a canned chicken vibe. Most people though love it and they don’t have a problem with it.
I am one who is really sensitive to that. So if you are like a total chicken snob, you may want to reconsider. Um, just wanted to throw that out there.
Pineapple (25 year shelf life)
Pineapple, delicious. That’s 25 percent off this month. So good. Tastes like candy. I have a couple pantry can sizes of pineapple in our 72 hour kits for like a fun, fresh snack, because it is just strictly pineapple, but it’s a smaller size. It’s sealed. It still has a 25 year shelf life. It’s got a pop top for easy opening, and so I have a couple of those in our 72 hour kits because the pineapple is so sweet, it’s like candy. Seriously, it’s so good.
Fuji Apple Slices (25 year shelf life)
Next is Fuji apples, those are 25 percent off. Those are really good, they go really fast because they are like full apple slices. So, I would definitely get those in the number 10 can size if you’re going to get any of them. They’re really good. They’re a crowd pleaser, but they go really fast.
EGGS!!!! (7 year shelf life)
If I were you though, my first priority this month would be eggs, if I didn’t already have quite a bit in my food storage. We use eggs in baking, but we also use eggs like every morning at our house. And we would be very sad if we didn’t have eggs. So with egg prices right now that are insane, honestly, they’re about the same price where I live anyway for as freeze dried eggs. That’s how expensive eggs are right now. So where this used to feel like, “oh my gosh, those are so expensive. I would never buy freeze dried eggs.” Now we’re paying that for fresh eggs. Really crazy. It’s actually crazy to me that they haven’t raised their egg prices because a lot of other places have; even restaurants that use eggs in their dishes are increasing…there’s a surcharge on those dishes right now. So anyway, eggs! Definitely closer to the actual price of eggs in this country right now, and they’re great.
So I put them in an airtight container. I really like this one because I can open it from the side, and like do a scoop type action. Or I can pour from here.
The ratio is 2 tablespoons of egg powder to 3 tablespoons of water. And if I’m baking, I just throw it right in the mixing bowl or whatever. You don’t even have to mix them together and whisk them or anything. You don’t have to do that. You just throw it all in because it gets mixed in your baking.
If you’re making scrambled eggs, I just put the egg powder and the water in a bowl and stir it a little bit and throw it in and they make perfect scrambled eggs. So definitely a staple. 25 percent off. They are expensive, but they’re a staple and they’re essential in our house.
Pepper Jack Cheese (25 year shelf life)
Pepper jack cheese is 25 percent off.
I have not tried actual pepper jack cheese because we’re not fans of that kind of cheese. But I have tried their cheddar cheese and it’s awesome. It’s crazy to me that we have cheese with a 25 year shelf life sitting under our bed right now. I mean, that’s just crazy to me. When you reconstitute it, you do want to follow the instructions to a T.
You need to add the water, put it in a Ziploc bag, put it in the fridge for a while, and let it do its thing. It does come out with a little bit different consistency as if you had just grated a fresh block of cheese, but it is 100 percent cheese. It’s pretty crazy. It’s awesome. We’ve had it on tacos, I’ve used it on top of meals, and it melts just like normal cheese would melt in the oven or with heat. It’s really great. I even made grilled cheese sandwiches with it. And they were awesome. And they tasted completely like normal, you know, fresh cheese. So, can’t recommend their cheese enough. So, if you’re a Pepper Jack fan, that is what is on sale.
Instant Brown Rice (7 year shelf life)
Instant brown rice, it’s good, I’ve made it, it’s easy, it’s delicious. It’s just pretty expensive, even when it is on sale, it’s pretty pricey. So, I just buy my brown rice at the grocery store, and I’m really good about rotating it, and that’s how I do my brown rice. I don’t have any in cans, but it is great if you want to spend the money on it.
