52 Weeks of Food Storage
Week 9
- Budget: $20
- Purchase: Shortening & Vinegar
- Shortening/Lard (tub/sticks)
- Normal White Vinegar
- Apple Cider Vinegar
- Balsamic Vinegar
- Red Wine Vinegar
- Rice Vinegar
Obviously not all of these, but $20 worth of the stuff you use the most!
This week we are getting two fairly unrelated things, and I realize they’re unrelated. It’s just kind of how things shook out. These two things just didn’t fit in other categories for the budgets I have assigned.
So we’re getting vinegar and shortening.
Shortening
For shortening: We already covered oil in February, but we didn’t cover shortening. It would be something like this, or if you get it in sticks like this. I really like these – they’re really nice for baking, but if I’m just throwing some in a pan or something, I like to scoop it out of here. So I use both. Whatever Crisco, Shortening, Lard, whatever you use, we’re gonna get that this week.
Vinegar
And then, as I said, vinegar is just kind of in a little separate category and I didn’t wanna put it with other stuff. So this week we’re also gonna get vinegar. At the very least, get white vinegar, like the normal vinegar. But if you usually use red wine vinegar, or balsamic vinegar, rice vinegar … if you use any of those on a fairly regular basis, depending on your cooking preferences, you’ll wanna pick up an extra bottle or two of those.
Budget
So this is really going to depend on what type of cooking you do. Maybe you don’t ever use shortening, and so you don’t need to spend any of your budget on that, so then you’ll have more money freed up to spend on different types of vinegar. Maybe you’re gonna spend at least half your budget on just shortening, and so then maybe you just do the regular vinegar. Whatever works for you, whatever you’re going to use the most of, but your budget this week is only $20, so make it count.
If you don’t have quite enough money this week in your budget for all of the Crisco and all of the vinegars that you would want, make a note of that and you can spend some budget later on when I recommend something that you don’t really use in your cooking or baking. Remember, that’s always an option during this program if you run out of money.

But this is how I combined it for this program. So shortening and vinegar, if you don’t have the budget to get all of these things and all of the different variations that you use on a regular basis, make a note of it and you can add that to a different week later on.
So 20 bucks shortening and vinegar. Have a great week!
