52 Weeks of Food Storage

Week 8

  • Budget: $30
  • Purchase: White Rice, Brown Rice, Minute Rice, Rice-a-Roni, Jasmine Rice, Arborio Rice, etc.
  • Substitute Options: Frozen Riced Cauliflower, Quinoa

This week we are spending $30 on rice. Before you think that that is just way too much to spend on rice, let’s think about all of the different rices out there.

Different Types of Rice to Consider

  • White rice
  • Brown rice
  • Minute rice, which is different from white rice…this stuff cooks in five minutes
  • Rice-A-Roni (or things that are similar to rice a roni)
  • Lots of different rice out there, and I haven’t even mentioned like Jasmine Rice or the arborio or whatever it’s called. There’s a lot of different rice out there.

This is the only week we are focusing on rice for the whole year. That’s why I did make it a $30 budget.

If you’re like us, you use just about all those rices that I just named off.

Substitutes

If you’re more of a riced cauliflower type person, then you could buy some frozen rice cauliflower. Just be mindful that that’s obviously going to take up space in your freezer, so make sure you have room for that before you go to the grocery store.

That would be a substitute for those of you who don’t eat rice. Another substitute would be quinoa. If you prefer this over rice or in addition to rice (we have a couple meals that we prefer quinoa with, so it just kind of depends).

Budget Considerations

This is a week, honestly, where if you use all the different types of rice that I use in my cooking, you’re gonna have a hard time sticking to the $30 budget and vice versa. If you are someone who rarely cooks with rice, this is gonna be a really easy one for you to keep under budget. So, just know that this is the only week we are focusing on rice or quinoa. So spend your $30 wisely.

If you’re like me and you use a bunch of different kinds, I would buy a couple extras of each.

I would get a couple boxes of Minute rice. I would get a few of these, maybe a bag of long grain white rice, long grain brown rice, and call it a day. But really it’s just whatever you can get and whatever you feel would be most useful to have extras of.

So basically, whatever you’re going to use the most, and that’s it.

If you don’t eat any sort of rice or riced cauliflower, a substitute idea would be quinoa or also pasta. However, we will have a week later on this year where we focus on just pasta. So just know that pasta’s coming up. You don’t have to split this week’s budget between rice and pasta. I’m just mentioning that that would be something similar that you would probably use for similar meals…you would put pasta on the side instead of rice. So anyway, those are some substitute ideas for you. So the bottom line is $30 this week on rice or something similar.
