Shelf Life
One thing to note about oil is their shelf life isn’t crazy long, I would say. I mean, obviously it depends on where you get it, when you get it, when it was manufactured, or packaged, and then the types of oil and all of that. But I would say a good average is probably around 6 months. So you don’t wanna get like 10 huge bottles of oil (I mean, you’re not gonna be able to do that with $30 anyway), but you don’t wanna get a ton and ton and ton of the same kind of oil if you’re not gonna be able to go through it with your normal everyday cooking by the expiration date. So just keep that in mind.
I don’t think we’re gonna run into that issue because $30 isn’t a crazy budget for all these different oils that you may be purchasing, but just keep that in mind as you are purchasing, that you’ll wanna look at the expiration dates.
Rotate!
And remember, we are always rotating. So when you get home from the grocery store this week and you’re putting your oil away, if you already have one or two things of olive oil and you get a couple more, you’re gonna put these new ones behind that.
So one way to track this, if you don’t have a system where you have a front and a back type of deal and you have ’em stacked that way, is to either circle the expiration dates with a Sharpie, or you can just write the expiration date with a Sharpie on the lid of the bottle of the oil, or on the label somewhere or something like that. So that is one way for you to be able to look really quickly and say, “Okay, what’s my oldest oil? I’m gonna get that!” when you run out next time.
That is just a little tip for you, for your rotation. Just remember to do something so that you can be tracking which one is the oldest one or has the nearest expiration date, so that you are constantly rotating this stuff.
